Where Is Area Code 239?

Updated: March 27th 2024

The 239 area code was implemented as a split from the 941 area code. Area code 239 currently covers Cape Coral, Fort Meyers, Naples, Sanibel Island, and other small cities that lie between Miami and Tampa. The largest of these cities is Cape Coral, which is actually a fairly new city that was founded in 1957.

Cape Coral city planners made every effort to make the 239 area code a desirable place to live. Initial development included a public yacht club, state of the art medical clinic, a golf course, and more than 400 miles of pristine canals. Interestingly, Cape Coral has the most canals in the world. Accordingly, people started flocking to this attractive region immediately after construction completed. City planners also promoted the city throughout the United States by hiring celebrity spokespeople to talk about the benefits of living in the Cape Coral area code.

The 239 area code has top rated educational institutions. Cape Coral High School is rated as an A+ school, and has even won the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence. Furthermore, the school paper, The Seahawk’s Eye consistently wins national awards. Also, the athletic department at Cape Coral High School was recognized by Sports Illustrated for its outstanding programs for its athletes. Obviously, Cape Coral High School has somehow managed to excel in both the academic and athletic arenas as well as maintaining great national press.

Students from Cape Coral High School often go on to continue their education at Florida Gulf Coast University, which is also located in the 239 area code. Florida Gulf Coast University is commonly referred to as FGCU and is a highly regarded public university in Southwest Florida.

FGCU has an outstanding Business Administration program, which lures students from nearby cities. In fact, FGCU is located only a few miles from Naples, making it possible for students to commute. Additionally, FGCU is steadily increasing their academic demands for admission into the university. Students in the last few years have had excellent high school GPA’s as well as steadily rising SAT scores.

Also located in area code 239, Sanibel Island is a major tourist destination. With shells that include sand dollars and whelks, its beaches are known for their excellent selection of seashells. In fact, the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum is located in the 239 area code, and is the only museum in the world that is dedicated to studying and researching sea shells. For example, the museum has more than 2 million sea shells and many of them are on display for visitors. There are many beaches in Sanibel, and almost all of them have seashells. However, parking is severely limited in this portion of the 230 area code, which has become influential in making Sanibel a popular spot for vacation homes.

The average income for households in Sanibel is just under $100,000 and the poverty line is shockingly low at only 3% of the population. Accordingly, Sanibel is a vacation destination that is mostly reserved for wealthier individuals. For instance, Porter J. Goss, a former CIA director sought anonymity and refuge in the 239 area code. Fittingly, Sanibel is also home to conchologists and malacologists, including the famed American conchologist, Robert Tucker Abbott. As one of the leaders in the field of studying seashells, Abbott has published over 30 books that are studied all over the world. The Sanibel Island area code is also a fashionable retirement spot for less well-known individuals.
