Area code 518 is the area code for eastern upstate New York. Area code 518 is located in the Eastern Time Zone and covers 17 counties of New York. When area code 518 was put into service on January 1, 1947, it was one of New York’s original area codes. An overlay area code, 838, has been approved and is to be implemented in September 2017.

Albany is the capital of New York and is the county seat of Albany County. Albany is situated on the Hudson River and is approximately 150 miles north of New York City. Albany is the economic and cultural center of the Capital District of New York. Albany has a humid continental climate, meaning hot, wet summers and cold, snowy winters. Going back in history, the area was originally inhabited by Algonquian Indian tribes. Permanent European claims began when Henry Hudson claimed the area for the Dutch in 1609. Albany has a population of 97,856 and the racial makeup of the city is 52.3% White, 27.0% African American, 9.2% Hispanic, and 7.4% Asian (2010 Census). Unfortunately Albany is among the top ten most dangerous cities in New York.

Albany’s economy is centered on government, education, technology, and health care; more than 30% of Albany’s population works in government related positions. Points of interest in the city include the New York State Capitol, the New York State Museum, the USS Slater (DE-766), the Crossgates Mall, and the Albany Institute of History & Art. There are over 60 public parks and recreation areas throughout Albany; Washington Park is the city’s premier park and is the location of the Tulip Festival, a festival that celebrates the city’s Dutch heritage. When it comes to entertainment, Albany is known for hosting many nationally touring artists and acts; entertainment venues include The Egg, the Palace Theatre, and the Times Union Center. Since Albany is a city of historical and political significance, there are numerous historical buildings, historic districts, and museums located within the city.

Schenectady is a city in New York and is the county seat of Schenectady County. Schenectady is situated near the confluence of the Mohawk River and the Hudson River and is part of the Capital District. Going back in history, the area was originally inhabited by the Mohawk. In 1661, Arent van Curler and other colonists settled the area. In 1690, French forces and their Indian allies attacked Schenectady by burning the town down and killing the majority of the inhabitants; this was known as the Schenectady Massacre. Schenectady was incorporated as a borough in 1765 and then was chartered as a city in 1798. Today Schenectady has a population of 66,135 and the racial makeup of the city is 59.38% White, 24.19% African American, 14.47% Hispanic, and 2.62% Asian (2010 Census). Unfortunately Schenectady is considered a dangerous city to reside in. When it comes to the economy, Schenectady is home to two prominent businesses, General Electric and the American Locomotive Company (ALCO). Points of interest in the city include the Proctors Theater, the Central Park Rose Garden, the Via Aquarium, and the Museum of Innovation and Science.

Troy is a city in New York and is the county seat of Rensselaer County. Troy is situated on the eastern bank of the Hudson River and is part of the Capital District. Troy was incorporated as a town in 1791 and then was incorporated as a city in 1816. Troy has a population of 50,129 and the racial makeup of the city is 69.7% White, 16.4% African American, 7.9% Hispanic, and 3.4% Asian (2010 Census). Founded in 1824, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is located in Troy and is the oldest private engineering and technical university in the United States.
