Area code 972 can be found in Texas serving most of the eastern portion of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. Area code 972 was put into effect in 1995 and was created from a split of area code 214. In 1999, area codes 214 and 972 were merged, with area code 972 converted into an overlay; area code 469 was also introduced as an overlay.

Dallas has a population of 1,197,816 and the racial makeup of the city is 50.7% White, 42.4% Hispanic, 25.0% African American, and 2.9% Asian (2010 Census). Dallas is not a safe city to reside in due to the high crime rate.

Currently Dallas’ economy is doing very well, especially with the residential real estate market booming. There are nine Fortune 500 companies, three major shopping malls, and more than a dozen billionaires located in the city. Major industries in the city include banking, technology, commerce, healthcare, and telecommunications. When it comes to education, Dallas is the educational hub for much of the South Central United States; there are several universities located in the city and in the surrounding area.

The State Fair of Texas has been held in Dallas at Fair Park since 1886. The fair is Dallas’ signature event, bringing in over $300 million to the city's economy every year. Packing the Cotton Bowl Stadium full of college football fans each year is the Red River Showdown, a rivalry game between the University of Texas at Austin and The University of Oklahoma. The Dallas Mavericks (NBA) and the Dallas Stars (NHL) are the two major professional sports teams based in the city. When it comes to cuisine, Dallas is famous for barbecue and authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine. Major points of interest in the city include the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, the Dallas Museum of Art, the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, the Dallas World Aquarium, and the Klyde Warren Park.

Grand Prairie is the fifteenth most populous city in Texas and is mostly within Dallas County. Located approximately 14 miles west of Dallas and 20 miles east of Fort Worth, Grand Prairie is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. Grand Prairie has a population of 175,396 and the racial makeup of the city is 52.6% White, 42.7% Hispanic, 20.2% African American, and 6.5% Asian (2010 Census).
