El Paso was considered part of New Mexico under Spanish rule until its cession to the United States in 1848. The United States and Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which made the settlements on the north bank of the Rio Grande a formal American settlement. The Compromise of 1850 placed El Paso on the Texas side. El Paso County was created in 1850 and El Paso became a city in 1873. In 1883, El Paso became the county seat of El Paso County.

The University of Texas at El Paso is one of the city’s major employers and is the second largest university in the country to have a majority Mexican American student population. When it comes to sports, El Paso is home to the Sun Bowl, an annual American college football bowl game; the first game was held in 1937.
