This city is home to Wesleyan College, which happens to be the first educational institution in the entire world to offer degrees to female students. Nicknamed the Heart of Georgia, the Macon area code is a loved by its residents and tourists. The 478 area code was implemented as a split from area code 912. In 2000, the 478 and 229 area codes were split from the 912 area code in order to create numbering relief in the state.

Established in 1936, Wesleyan College is a liberal arts women’s college in the 478 area code. Interestingly, Wesleyan College is not only the first educational institution to offer degrees to women; it is also the birthplace of sororities. The oldest sorority, Alpha Delta Pi was founded at Wesleyan College in 1951. Today, Alpha Delta Pi has more than 220,000 members and is nationally recognized as the oldest society that is just for women. The small student to faculty ratio and prestigious curriculum has made Wesleyan College one of the best in the country. Academic courses are rigorous at Mercer University and they encourage original thought and analytical skills. Accordingly, Mercer University is home to the Walter F. George School of Law, which is one of the oldest law schools in the country. The law school at Mercer offers a specialty legal writing program that has consistently scored as one of the top in the nation. Professors at the Walter F. George School of Law are also favorites amongst students. In fact, the faculty at Mercer is actively involved in the students’ education and often form personal relationships with them. Interestingly, the well-known legal commentator, Nancy Grace is a graduate of Mercer University as well as the Walter F. George School of Law. Grace is undoubtedly one of the most outspoken graduates from the 478 area code.

Macon is known throughout the world as the “Cherry Blossom Capital.” More than 300,000 Yoshino cherry Trees are scattered throughout the Macon, GA area code and bloom sometime in March each year.

In order to celebrate its cherry blossom trees, the 478 area code holds the International Cherry Blossom Festival for ten days each spring. Activities for people of all ages are held during the Cherry Blossom Festival, including concerts, galas, fashion shows, marathons, and theatrical performances. Sometimes the Macon International Cherry Blossom Festival even features animal shows.

The 478 area code is also home to the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. Conveniently located in Downtown Macon, the Georgia Music Hall of Fame has inducted many famous southern musicians. Amongst the most notable inductees into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame are Ray Charles, James Brown, Otis Redding, Gladys Knight, Little Richard, Johnny Mercer, Trisha Yearwood, Third Day, Usher, Luadacris, R.E.M., and the Atlanta Rhythm Section. Exhibits in the museum serve to honor the inductees as well as cultivate music curiosity in the museum’s patrons. In fact, the museum’s main purpose is to foster an interest in music in Georgia residents and educate the state’s youth in an environment that encourages learning.

One can easily gather that area code 478 has a rich musical heritage, especially as it serves as the location for the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. The Allman Brothers Band was based in Macon at one point, which has made the 478 area code sacred to their millions of fans. The band was recognized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and also won a Grammy Award in the 1990s. Remarkably, The Allman Brothers Band is still performing more than 40 years after its inception. Ultimately, the band is credited with revitalizing the rock and roll music industry through their exceptional live performances. Born in Macon in the early 1930s, Little Richard has arguably done for the soul genre what The Allman Brothers did for rock and roll. By introducing funk into rock and roll music, Little Richard cultivated an entirely new genre of music.  As a result, Little Richard is frequently credited with influencing the music of legendary musicians such as Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley and even James Brown. It is virtually impossible to not notice Little Richard’s unique rhythm in the music that he influenced.

A trip to area code 478 would undoubtedly be incomplete without visiting the Ocmulgee National Monument. This remarkable monument preserves traces of cultures that existed over 1,000 years ago.
