Jersey City is the second most populous city in New Jersey, is part of the New York metropolitan area, and is the county seat of Hudson County. The Hudson River, the Upper New York Bay, the Hackensack River, and the Newark Bay bound Jersey City. Jersey City is the site of the first permanent European community in New Jersey. The City of Jersey was incorporated in Bergen Township in 1820. When the city was reincorporated in 1838, it became completely independent of North Bergen and was renamed Jersey City. In 1840, Jersey City became part of Hudson County. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the city was a destination for new immigrants to the United States in addition to being a dock and manufacturing town.

Known as one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world, Jersey City has a population of 247,597 and the racial makeup of the city is 32.67% White, 27.57% Hispanic, 25.85% African American, and 23.67% Asian (2010 Census). While there has been a decrease in the overall crime rate over the last few years, Jersey City falls between a safe city and a dangerous city.

When it comes to the economy, Jersey City is home to one of the nation’s largest downtown central business districts. Much of the jobs are based in finance and service, shipping and distribution, and wholesale and retail. Jersey City is home to two universities, New Jersey City University and Saint Peter’s University. Points of interest in the city include the Liberty State Park, the Empty Sky-9/11 Memorial, the Liberty Science Center, the Newport Centre Mall, the Colgate Clock, and the J. Owen Grundy Park.

Union City is located in Hudson County in New Jersey. Going back in history, Union City was incorporated as a city in 1925 when the two towns of West Hoboken and Union Hill merged. During the mid 19th century to the early 20th century, German Americans and Dutch dominated Union City. Together with Swiss and Austrian immigrants, they established the European-style lace making industry, which led to the introduction of Schiffli machines in Hudson County; Union City at that point became known as the “Embroidery Capital of the United States.” By the late 1960s, Union City was settled by a large migration of Cuban refugees who fled Fidel Castro’s regime, which led to the nickname “Havana on the Hudson.” Today Union City has a population of 66,455 and the racial makeup of the city is 84.71% Hispanic, 58.01% White, 5.25% African American, and 2.39% Asian (2010 Census). For the most part, Union City is a fairly safe city to reside in. Bergenline Avenue is Union City’s main commercial thoroughfare; with over 300 retail stores and restaurants, it is the longest commercial avenue in New Jersey. When it comes to culture, Union City is best known for hosting the nation’s longest running Passion Play and the Cuban Day Parade.
