The Hudson River, the Upper New York Bay, the Hackensack River, and the Newark Bay bound Jersey City. Jersey City is the site of the first permanent European community in New Jersey. The City of Jersey was incorporated in Bergen Township in 1820. When the city was reincorporated in 1838, it became completely independent of North Bergen and was renamed Jersey City. In 1840, Jersey City became part of Hudson County. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the city was a destination for new immigrants to the United States in addition to being a dock and manufacturing town.

Together with Swiss and Austrian immigrants, they established the European-style lace making industry, which led to the introduction of Schiffli machines in Hudson County; Union City at that point became known as the “Embroidery Capital of the United States.” By the late 1960s, Union City was settled by a large migration of Cuban refugees who fled Fidel Castro’s regime, which led to the nickname “Havana on the Hudson.” Today Union City has a population of 66,455 and the racial makeup of the city is 84.71% Hispanic, 58.01% White, 5.25% African American, and 2.39% Asian (2010 Census).
