Fayetteville has a humid subtropical climate, meaning hot, humid summers and mild, cool winters. Fayetteville is home to Fort Bragg, the largest military installation in the world. Going back in history, Fayetteville began as two settlements on the Cape Fear River; Cross Creek was established in 1756 and Campbelltown was established in 1762. When Cross Creek and Campbelltown merged in 1783, the new town was incorporated as Fayetteville in honor of the Frenchman Marquis de Lafayette. During the end of the 18th century, Fayetteville was the political center of North Carolina. The Great Fire of 1831 was when hundreds of homes and businesses and the majority of public buildings in Fayetteville were lost in a devastating fire. In 1918, Camp Bragg was established as an artillery training ground northwest of Fayetteville. Camp Bragg was renamed Fort Bragg in 1922. Fort Bragg majorly impacted Fayetteville’s economy and is synonymous with Fayetteville; without Fort Bragg, Fayetteville would have remained a small city.
