Going back in history, Fayetteville began as two settlements on the Cape Fear River; Cross Creek was established in 1756 and Campbelltown was established in 1762. When Cross Creek and Campbelltown merged in 1783, the new town was incorporated as Fayetteville in honor of the Frenchman Marquis de Lafayette. During the end of the 18th century, Fayetteville was the political center of North Carolina.
