Greenville is a city in North Carolina and is the county seat of Pitt County. Greenville is located just inland off the North Carolina coast and is the principal city of the Greenville metropolitan area. Like most of North Carolina, Greenville has a humid subtropical climate. Greenville is the educational, health, and entertainment center of Eastern North Carolina. In 1786, Martinsborough became “Greenesville” in honor of General Nathanael Greene; it was later shortened to Greenville. During the mid 1800s, steamboat lines transported passengers and goods on the Tar River, which in turn opened Greenville up to the world. Greenville was a major cotton export center and was one of North Carolina’s leading tobacco marketing and warehouse centers. In 1907, Greenville became the education center of Eastern North Carolina when the East Carolina Teacher’s Training School (now East Carolina University) was established. In 1999, Greenville experienced major flooding when Hurricane Floyd made landfall in Eastern North Carolina.

Greenville has a population of 84,554 and the racial makeup of the city is 56.27% White, 36.98% African American, 3.76% Hispanic, and 2.39% Asian (2010 Census). With a somewhat high crime rate, Greenville is considered a dangerous city to reside in.

Greenville’s economy is centered on health care, education, and manufacturing, with Vidant Health and East Carolina University as the two largest employers. Numerous cultural events such as musical concerts and theatrical and dance productions occur on and off the East Carolina University campus. Uptown Greenville is known as the arts and entertainment hub of the city. Points of interest in the city include Alice F. Keene Park, River Park North, the Greenville Convention Center, the Greenville Mall, and the Greenville Museum of Art.

Rocky Mount is a city in North Carolina and is part of two counties, Edgecombe County and Nash County. Going back in history, Rocky Mount got its start when the first post office was established at the falls of the Tar River in 1816. Rocky Mount Mills, one of the first cotton mills in North Carolina, was established in 1818 and then in 1845, Rocky Mount became connected to the outside world by way of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad. Rocky Mount was incorporated as a town in 1867 and then was incorporated as a city in 1907. Today Rocky Mount has a population of 57,477 and the racial makeup of the city is 61.3% African American, 32.4% White, 3.7% Hispanic, and 1.0% Asian (2010 Census). Unfortunately Rocky Mount is among the top ten most dangerous cities in North Carolina. Points of interest in the city include the Rocky Mount Children’s Museum and Science Center, the Koi Pond Brewing Company, and Rocky Mount City Lake and Park.
