Updated: March 23rd 2024

Area code 757 is the area code for the southeast corner of Virginia. Area code 757 is located in the Eastern Time Zone and covers 18 counties of Virginia. Area code 757 was put into use on July 1, 1996, and was created from a split of area code 804.

Located on the southeastern coast of Virginia, Virginia Beach is the most populous city in the state. Virginia Beach is an independent city, which means it is administratively independent of any county. Virginia Beach has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and cool winters with light snowfall. The city has earned the reputation as a vacation destination, which is partly due to the fact that it is geographically out of the path of storms and hurricanes. Going back in history, the area was occupied by the Chesepian or Chesapeake, a Native American tribe, for thousands of years before the English colonists arrived at Cape Henry in 1607. Princess Anne County was formed in 1691; the small resort area of Virginia Beach developed in Princess Anne County in 1883. Virginia Beach became an incorporated town in 1906 and started becoming increasingly popular as a seasonal vacation spot. The resort area depended on railroad and electric trolley service until 1922 when Virginia Beach Boulevard was completed, which resulted in automobiles replacing streetcars and trains as a preferred mode of travel. Virginia Beach became an independent city in 1952 and merged with Princess Anne County in 1953 to form a new, much larger independent city while still retaining the name Virginia Beach.

Virginia Beach has a population of 437,994 and the racial makeup of the city is 67.7% White, 19.6% African American, 6.6% Hispanic, and 6.1% Asian (2010 Census). The low crime rate makes Virginia Beach a safe city to reside in.

While much of the economy is centered on tourism, military, agribusiness, and real estate also play important roles. Each year, more than 3 million people visit Virginia Beach to experience world-class beaches, an award-winning boardwalk, and a cosmopolitan downtown. The Virginia Beach Convention Center attracts many business travelers because it is a 516,000 square foot convention center that can hold any size meeting imaginable. Much of the city’s retail sales come from Lynnhaven Mall, a super-regional shopping mall that contains more than 180 stores, making it one of the largest malls on the East Coast. The largest and most popular festival in the city is the Neptune Festival. The festival has been in operation since 1974 and attracts close to 500,000 people each year by offering free concerts, seaside wine tastings, live music, and a sand sculpting contest. The biggest hot spot in the city is the Virginia Beach Boardwalk. The 3 mile long boardwalk spans 28-feet wide and features nautical sculptures, sidewalk entertainers, restaurants, shops, and vendors offering bike and surrey rentals. Points of interest in the city include the Military Aviation Museum, the First Landing State Park, the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, the Neptune's Park, the Mount Trashmore Park, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, and the Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum.
