Going back in history, Appleton was settled in 1847 by fur traders seeking to do business with Fox River Valley Native Americans. Appleton experienced growth when the Lawrence University opened in 1849. The first paper mill in Appleton was built in 1853 and Appleton was incorporated as a city in 1857. The paper industry was the foundation for the city’s economy; the paper industry needed electricity, so the nation's first hydroelectric central station was built in the city in 1882. Shortly thereafter, Appleton operated the first commercially successful electric streetcar company and also had the first telephone in Wisconsin.
