Appleton is the sixth most populous city in Wisconsin and the county seat of Outagamie County. Appleton serves as the heart of the Fox Cities, an urban area that includes nineteen communities along the region’s Fox River. Appleton has a humid continental climate, characterized by hot summers and cold winters. Going back in history, Appleton was settled in 1847 by fur traders seeking to do business with Fox River Valley Native Americans. Appleton experienced growth when the Lawrence University opened in 1849. The first paper mill in Appleton was built in 1853 and Appleton was incorporated as a city in 1857. The paper industry was the foundation for the city’s economy; the paper industry needed electricity, so the nation's first hydroelectric central station was built in the city in 1882. Shortly thereafter, Appleton operated the first commercially successful electric streetcar company and also had the first telephone in Wisconsin.

Today Appleton has a population of 72,623 and the racial makeup of the city is 87.5% White, 5.9% Asian, 5.0% Hispanic, and 1.7% African American (2010 Census). The low crime rate makes Appleton a safe city to reside in.
