Indianapolis residents use the 317 area code, which covers most of Central Indiana. The 317 area code was one of the original area codes in Indiana and was split once in 1948 when the 219 area code was added. Another split took place in 1997 when the 785 area code was added.

Living in the capital of Indiana comes with a lot of perks. There are obvious perks such as being near the annual Indianapolis 500 but there are also other perks that are slightly less obvious. Residents of the 317 area code enjoy a variety of festivals. For instance, the Italian Street Festival and Indiana Black Expo are representative of Indiana’s eclectic culture. Other festivals that appeal to nearly everyone include art fairs such as the Talbot Street Art Fair and the Penrod Art Fair. The Indiana State Fairgrounds are also utilized often. Nearly one million people flock to the Indiana State Fair grounds each year to attend the Indiana State Fair. Attracting major music names such as the Jonas Brothers, Backstreet Boys, Keith Urban, and Dolly Parton, the state fair is a must for residents and tourists. In the 1960s, The Beatles also performed at the Indiana State Fair. Surprisingly, Indiana is also a major player in fashion, hosting the Midwest Fashion Week each year. Although not as widely known as fashion weeks in other parts of the country, the Midwest Fashion Week does hold its own and is quickly gaining popularity in area code 317.

Unfortunately, living in the 317 area code is not all fun and games. The Indianapolis area code is notorious for its crime. In recent years, Indianapolis has ranked on the FBI’s crime report as one of the most violent cities in the United States. The 317 area code is largely segregated and crime tends to occur in lower income neighborhoods. Accordingly, it is wise to stay out of bad neighborhoods when living in the 317 area code or traveling to the region. Luckily for tourists, the main areas of Indianapolis, which include major attractions, are generally safe. It is very unlikely for a tourist to be affected by crime in Indianapolis while touring a museum or checking out one of the more well-known venues.

As the Racing Capital of the World, it is difficult to think about Indianapolis without picturing fabulous racing cars. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame in the 317 area code is one of the best in the world.

It features the largest assortment of racing and antique cars in the entire world. Furthermore, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame is also the host of many of the cars that won the Indy 500. If you are interested in seeing the famous race track up close, you could also take a tour bus around the Indy 500 race track. However, do not expect the same adrenaline that is associated with racing. The bus is notorious for taking a long time to go around the race track and adrenaline junkies often walk away feeling a bit disappointed. Nevertheless, seeing the racecars of winners as far back as the early 1900s makes a trip to the hall of fame in area code 317 undoubtedly worth it.

Indianapolis

Indianapolis is not only known for racing, it is also widely associated with its NFL team, the Indianapolis Colts. Fortunately for residents of the 317 area code, the Colts have won a few championships. Most recently in 2007, the Indianapolis Colts shocked the country when it won its first Super Bowl Championship in more than thirty years. During the fall months attending a Colts game is a must for both locals and tourists. At the very least, try to wear blue on days when the team is playing or risk getting dirty looks from locals in area code 317. Lucas Oil Stadium where the Colts play opened as recently as 2008. The modern sports stadium has costs the city millions each year, which makes it imperative that they fill the 63,000 seats available for spectators at Colts games.
