Jackson is the eighth most populous city in Tennessee and the county seat of Madison County. Located approximately 80 miles northeast of Memphis, Jackson is the regional hub of trade for West Tennessee. Jackson has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot, muggy summers and chilly, wet winters. Going back in history, the Chickasaw originally inhabited the area; the Chickasaw signed the 1818 treaty that secured the area for European-American settlement. European-American settlers settled on the banks of the Forked Deer River in the early 1800s. They named the settlement Alexandria but the name was not accepted because there was already a town in Tennessee named Alexandria. In 1822, Alexandria was renamed Jackson, after General Andrew Jackson, and was chosen as the county seat of Madison County. During the Plantation era, Jackson was developed as an agricultural area based on cultivation of cotton; many African-American slaves were brought to the city to work on the cotton plantations. Jackson developed rapidly when it became a hub of railroad systems in 1851. Between 1999 and 2008, Jackson was struck by several violent tornadoes. Today Jackson has a population of 65,211 and the racial makeup of the city is 49.2% White, 45.7% African American, 4.0% Hispanic, and 1.2% Asian (2010 Census). Unfortunately Jackson is a dangerous city to reside in. Every year the Miss Tennessee Pageant is held in Jackson. Points of interest in the city include the Casey Jones Village, the Rusty's TV and Movie Car Museum, the Ballpark at Jackson, the Cypress Grove Nature Park, and the International Rock-A-Billy Hall of Fame.

Dyersburg is a city in northwest Tennessee and the county seat of Dyer County. Dyersburg is situated on the Forked Deer River and is approximately 50 miles northwest of Jackson. Dyersburg is located near the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which means there is a small chance of a major earthquake happening within the city within the next 50 years. Going back in history, the Chickasaw originally inhabited the area; the Chickasaw relinquished all of West Tennessee when they signed the 1818 treaty. In 1823, Dyer County was established and 60 acres were donated for the new county seat, which was named Dyersburg. Located on the Forked Deer River, Dyersburg was established as a river town. During the early 20th century, Dyersburg emerged as a regional railroad hub.

Today Dyersburg has a population of 17,145 and the racial makeup of the city is 69.5% White, 25.9% African American, 3.0% Hispanic, and 0.8% Asian (2010 Census). Dyersburg’s extremely high crime rate and small population make it one of the most dangerous cities in Tennessee.
