Las Vegas is the most populated city in Nevada and is the county seat of Clark County. Las Vegas is considered the main commercial, cultural, and financial center for Nevada. Known as the Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas is famous for its gambling, shopping, entertainment, casino-hotels, and nightlife. Las Vegas is a top tourist destination and has more AAA Five Diamond hotels than any other city in the world. Las Vegas is often referred to as Sin City due to the countless forms of adult entertainment throughout the city. Going back in history, Las Vegas was founded in 1905 and then incorporated as a city in 1911. In the 1950s, the first desegregated casino-hotel, Moulin Rouge, opened. During the 1960s, major corporations bought and built hotel-casino properties. In 1989, Steve Wynn opened the city’s first mega-casino resort, The Mirage.

Las Vegas is the largest city within the Mojave Desert. The city is surrounded by mountain ranges while the majority of the landscape is rocky and arid. Las Vegas has a subtropical hot desert climate, which means long, very hot summers and short, mild to chilly winters. Since rainfall is scarce, xeriscaping is highly encouraged.

Las Vegas has a population of 583,756 and the racial makeup of the city is 62.1% White, 31.5% Hispanic, 11.1% African American, and 6.1% Asian (2010 Census). Unfortunately violent crime is on the rise in Las Vegas, making the city one of the most dangerous cities in Nevada.

To no surprise, the economy revolves around tourism, conventions, entertainment, and gambling. The Las Vegas Strip is where the majority of gambling and entertainment takes place. Museums in the city include the Mob Museum, the Neon Museum, the National Atomic Testing Museum, Wayne Newton’s Casa de Shenandoah, and Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. Casinos in the city include the Wynn Las Vegas Casino, the Casino at Bellagio, the Palazzo Resort Casino, the Casino at the Venetian, and the Casino at Caesars Palace. Major points of interest in the city include the High Roller, the Stratosphere Tower, the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, the Hoover Dam Bypass, the Fremont Street Experience, and the Bellagio Fountains. In a few years, Las Vegas will have two major professional teams, the Vegas Golden Knights (hockey) and the Oakland Raiders (football).

Henderson is located in Clark County and is the second largest city in Nevada. Henderson is approximately 16 miles southeast of Las Vegas. Going back in history, Henderson got its start in the 1940s during World War II with the construction of the Basic Magnesium Plant. The plant allowed Henderson to supply the United States War Department with magnesium, which in turn made Henderson the main supplier of magnesium in the United States. Post World War II, magnesium was no longer needed, therefore the majority of residents left Henderson. To save Henderson from becoming war surplus property, the Nevada Legislature approved a bill that gave Nevada the authority to purchase the industrial plants. In 1953, Henderson was incorporated as a city. Like Las Vegas, Henderson is situated in the Mojave Desert and has a subtropical hot desert climate. The mountains that surround the city mainly have gentle slopes. Henderson has a population of 257,729 and the racial makeup of the city is 76.9% White, 14.9% Hispanic, 7.2% Asian, and 5.1% African American (2010 Census). Henderson is a great city to live in or visit because it is one of the safest cities in Nevada. In addition to shopping malls, restaurants, and casino-hotels, Henderson is only a few miles away from Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Strip. Points of interest in the city include the Lion Habitat Ranch, the Clark County Museum, the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, the Las Vegas Distillery, the Sunset Station Casino, the M Resort Casino, the District at Green Valley Ranch, and the Jokers Wild Casino.
