St. Charles is the county seat of St. Charles County and is a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri. Going back in history, French Canadian fur trader Louis Blanchette founded the city in 1769; he named the city Les Petites Cotes (The Little Hills). In 1804, the leaders of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, William Clark and Meriwether Lewis, stopped by the city for a few days before starting their expedition. From 1821 to 1826, St. Charles served as the first Missouri capital.
