The railroad company sold three unnamed sites to the Arkansas Valley Town Site Company; William S. Fears chose one of the locations and named it Broken Arrow. During the first half of the 20th century, Broken Arrow was a small town that relied on agriculture and the coalmines. In the 1960s, Broken Arrow experienced major growth when the Broken Arrow Expressway was constructed to connect the city with downtown Tulsa.
