Throughout the late 1600s, more than 150 people were accused of being witches and subsequently arrested in the quiet city of Salem, Massachusetts. Some of these individuals were convicted and executed, which scarred Salem’s reputation forever. Currently, the city of Salem is much less controversial and does not draw significant attention, except around Halloween. The 351 area code is used as the Salem area code by the 40,000 people that call the city home. The 351 area code was implemented as an overlay to the 978 area code in 2001, which resulted in mandatory ten digit dialing in the region. However, residents in the Salem, MA area code do not seem to mind. In fact, most residents are associated with Salem State University and are focused on their studies. A good portion of residents in area code 351 are also involved with tourism, especially the Peabody Essex Museum. The Peabody Essex Museum has successfully preserved many of the documents that can be traced back to the Salem Witch Trials in the 1600s. As a major tourist attraction in the 351 area code, many shops boasting a witch-themed inventory can be found in the vicinity surrounding the Peabody Essex Museum.
